The Super Bowl is here and you can still enjoy snacks during the game without overloading on calories and fat! Make your game day snacks healthier with some of these options:
- Roasted Nuts: Mix any type of nuts with a little olive oil and seasonings of your choice. Try rosemary, cinnamon, chili powder, garlic powder, cumin, or cayenne pepper. Roast on a cookie sheet for 10 minutes at 450 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Easy Guacamole: Mash 3 medium ripe avocados. Mix with 1 diced tomato, ½ diced onion, ½ cup chopped cilantro, and 2 Tbsp lime juice.
- Greek Yogurt Dip: Use fat-free plain Greek yogurt in place of sour cream or mayo in your favorite dip recipe. Use slices of cucumbers, peppers, celery, broccoli, or carrots to dip.
- Slow Cooker Chili: Try a lower fat ground turkey or chicken, instead of beef. Don’t forget to load your chili up with chopped vegetables and beans!
- Zucchini Fries: Dip cut zucchini strips in egg and whole wheat seasoned breadcrumbs. Bake on a sprayed cookie sheet at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes.
- Popcorn: Season plain popcorn with your favorite spices: garlic, paprika, parmesan cheese, chili seasoning and hot sauce are just a few examples!
- Fruit Salsa: Try a mango or pineapple salsa to incorporate some fruit into your snack.
- Lighter Loaded Nachos: Use lower calorie toppings such as low-fat cheese, tomatoes, peppers, onions, and beans. Try using multigrain tortilla chips (choose one with at least 5 grams of fiber per serving).
- Grilled Chicken Wings: Grilling instead of frying can save you 25 calories per wing. Choosing spices, instead of large amounts of sauces and bleu cheese, can eliminate additional calories.
- Buffalo Chicken Meatballs: Mix together 1 pound ground chicken, ¾ cup whole wheat panko, 1 large egg, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ½ teaspoon onion powder, 2 green onions (thinly sliced), and pepper to taste. Spray baking sheet. Roll into 24 meatballs and place onto baking sheet. Bake at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 4-5 minutes. Place meatballs into slow cooker and top with ¾ cup buffalo sauce. Cover and cook on low heat for 2 hours and serve!
