It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of David Hughes, MD, the CEO of Great Lakes Integrated Network and executive vice president for strategy and partnerships for Kaleida Health.
Dr. Hughes died unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 17, 2022.
In August of 2021, Dr. Hughes transitioned into his new role for Kaleida Health, focusing on strategy and relationships, in an effort to improve our population health footprint and pursue partnership opportunities with health care providers and payers. In this role, he had oversight of Great Lakes Integrated Network/Optimum Physician Alliance and was the primary physician liaison with ECMC, UBMD as well as General Physician, PC.
Dr. Hughes was named Kaleida Health’s executive vice president and chief medical officer in June of 2014. Prior to that, he was the organization’s senior vice president and chief clinical integration officer. He joined us from our partner organization, the Erie County Medical Center.
“Since joining Great Lakes Integrated Network, Dr. Hughes has been the heart and soul of our network,” said Richard Charles, MD, Chair of GLIN IPA Board of Directors. “There are no words to express our heartfelt sadness or gratitude for the opportunity to have worked alongside him. We can honor his legacy by committing ourselves to continue the work that he was so dedicated to.”
In his career, he also served as Kaleida Health's medical director for employee health, an attending physician in emergency medicine at Kaleida Health and ECMC, an assistant clinical professor in emergency medicine for the University at Buffalo (UB), as well the president of the Governing Board for the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNY) Faculty Practice Management Plan.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced in the coming days.
At this time, we ask you to keep Dr. Hughes’ family, friends, and co-workers in your thoughts and prayers.
